Week 15 The Final "Aha" Semester Overview

Image
This semester while taking the INT-323 textiles course, I can confidently say that the amount of information as well as usability for said information, has been the most I have gotten to be exposed to since my attending Judson University. The wide range of intricate details, real world applications and hands of work made this class much akin to actually beginning to branch off into the workforce of interior design.  In the start I was very unaware of all the important factors that go into the initial formation of different kinds of fabrics along with the varying production methods used to produce the goods used for textile creation. From the planting, the strands of fibers to the twisting, spinning and weaving to create individual yarns really showed just how involved this industry is at the heart of it. What looks to some as a solely decorative business from the outside looking in, can find that in the taking of this course there is so much calculated and comprehensive unde...

Image
Wall and Carpet Tile Installation When looking to develop the interior of a space the wall and carpet tile installation are essential aspects of making it not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing too. Regardless of whether it is a commercial building, residential home, or any other structure, the necessity of proper installation of wall and carpet tiles is extremely important for achieving a luxurious and finished look to the space.  The first step in wall tile installation is choosing the right materials. Since wall tiles come in such a vast variety of materials ranging from sculpted elements like ceramic and porcelain to more structurally common elements like glass and natural stone. Each material has its unique characteristics and requires specific installation methods, for instance, ceramic tiles are durable and resistant to moisture which makes them a great option for bathrooms and kitchens. Porcelain tiles, on the other hand are much more dense and less poro...

Week 12 Carpeting Installation & Maintenance

Image
Weekly Summary  In this week's readings and learnings we went through an overview of the different carpeting installation methods available as well as the assortment of techniques for maintaining the installed carpeting in its set place.  Types of Carpet Installations   The first on site task that has to be done is utilizing a thorough floor preparation involving the removal of existing flooring while making sure a clean and level surface is left underneath. If there is damage to the original subflooring then repairs need to be made. Another task is moisture testing to assess and mitigate potential issues of corrosion or formations of mold and mildew. Accurate measurements of the layout must also be done to align everything properly. Techniques for installations involving stretch-in’s, the process of securing carpeting to the floor typically needs a power stretcher. A power stretcher is a tool that tightens the carpet across the floor of the room resembling th...

Week 11 Blog Cushions & Soft Floorcoverings

Image
Weekly Summary   In this week's learnings and readings we covered the various kinds of soft floorcoverings including their overall structure and the evaluations they undergo to ensure prompt and adequate installation.  Types of Cushions and Their Materials  When looking at the kinds of cushions and their makeup, one key component to note is the material use of jute. Jute fiber cushions are a type of fibrous cushion that is very sustainable and somewhat durable but is often not as comfy as other alternatives and does not contain the moisture resistance that other materials might have. On the other hand polyester fiber cushions are very easy to clean and have mold resistant qualities but they are not as permeable as other materials which causes them to retain heat in hot weather. Foam fiber cushions are inexpensive to create and hold their shape for lengthy periods of time, but they have short lifespans and limited resilience. Cotton fiber cushions are soft and long-...

WEEK 10 Hand Knotted + Woven Floorcoverings

Image
WEEKLY SUMMARY  In this week's readings and learning we continued our in depth understanding of different kinds of floor coverings and carpeting, analyzing how it's made, the materials and design implementations that go into their various kinds.  When analyzing a carpetings design, it is important to take a closer look at the types of yarns used in its construction. Stuffer yarns are used in weaving to provide space between other yarns, allowing for the insertion of extra yarns into the cloth or fibers. This aids in the creation of various fabric effects such as increased thickness, texture, or pattern diversity in woven fabrics. Because the yarns are firmly embedded in the carpet's backing, dead-and-buried pile yarns in a Wilton carpet have the advantage of improving lifespan and wear and tear resistance. The disadvantage is that they might make repairs and changes more difficult because replacing individual strands or modifying the carpet requires a significant amount...
