WEEK 10 Hand Knotted + Woven Floorcoverings

Image
WEEKLY SUMMARY  In this week's readings and learning we continued our in depth understanding of different kinds of floor coverings and carpeting, analyzing how it's made, the materials and design implementations that go into their various kinds.  When analyzing a carpetings design, it is important to take a closer look at the types of yarns used in its construction. Stuffer yarns are used in weaving to provide space between other yarns, allowing for the insertion of extra yarns into the cloth or fibers. This aids in the creation of various fabric effects such as increased thickness, texture, or pattern diversity in woven fabrics. Because the yarns are firmly embedded in the carpet's backing, dead-and-buried pile yarns in a Wilton carpet have the advantage of improving lifespan and wear and tear resistance. The disadvantage is that they might make repairs and changes more difficult because replacing individual strands or modifying the carpet requires a significant amount...

BLOG 14 - BATH AND BEDDING TEXTILE PRODUCTS

Image
Textiles for bathrooms and bedding are very important in the design business because they serve two purposes: they combine style and utility to improve the overall look and feel of interior spaces. These textiles, which include bath rugs, sheets, duvets, and towels, are important design elements that enhance the aesthetic appeal of bathrooms and bedrooms. Beyond aesthetics, the user experience is elevated by the use of premium materials and innovative designs in bath and bedding fabrics, resulting in a feeling of luxury, comfort, and relaxation. In residential and commercial contexts, designers take great care when choosing textiles to ensure that they complement the overall scheme and create a unified, welcoming setting.  Additionally, the emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly materials in these textiles corresponds with the growing awareness of environmental factors in design techniques. BATH Bath textiles include a broad variety of things, such as bath rugs, towels, shower cu...

BLOG 13 - WALL VS. CARPET TILE INSTALLATION

Image
There are many different carpet installation techniques, each suited to the unique qualities of the carpet and the design of the room. The most popular technique for installing wall-to-wall carpeting is to stretch the carpet over a tack strip around the edge of the space. In order to guarantee a taut and wrinkle-free installation, skilled installers secure the carpet to the tack strip for a seamless and flawless finish using a power stretcher. A different approach called the direct glue-down technique is applying the appropriate adhesive directly to the subfloor and gluing the carpet there. When a more stable and level installation is required, this technique is frequently used in business settings.  Carpet tiles provide an installation method that is flexible. Because each tile is placed and fastened to the floor separately, there is no need to worry about damaged or discolored tiles being difficult to repair. This approach is well-liked in business settings since it is fle...

BLOG 12 - CARPET INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

Image
Carpet is a key component of residential interior design because it provides a pleasant, adaptable flooring option that improves both appearance and use. Carpeting creates a warm and appealing ambiance in living rooms, bedrooms, and lounges. Designers may create a seamless fit with the entire decor by personalizing each area with the large selection of colors, patterns, and textures available. In bedrooms, plush carpets made of soft fibers like wool or nylon provide feet a posh feel that enhances coziness and warmth. To handle heavy traffic and possible spills, long-lasting and stain-resistant textiles like polyester or solution-dyed nylon may be used in living areas. They help to insulate against sound, making the space calmer and cozier. This is especially useful for apartments or multi-story residences. Furthermore, carpets give another layer of insulation to the house, which can save energy expenses and help to keep a constant interior temperature. Carpets are frequently chosen wit...

BLOG 11 - SOFT FLOORCOVERS

Image
The underlying cushioning layer that sits between a soft floor covering and the floor, offering extra support, comfort, and insulation, is referred to as padding. By absorbing impact and minimizing wear on the floor covering, it plays a critical role in extending the life and functionality of carpets and rugs. Carpets, area rugs, and carpet tiles are examples of the diverse materials that make up soft floor coverings. These fabrics are renowned for their softness and texture, which give interior spaces a cozy, inviting feel. Soft floor coverings are a flexible design feature that enhances a room's overall appearance by enabling a variety of patterns, colors, and textures. They are popular alternatives because, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing, they also offer insulation, a soft surface underfoot, and acoustic benefits. There are three primary types of floor-covering cushioning, each with unique characteristics and uses. Jute, hair, or synthetic fibers are examples of m...

BLOG 10 - HAND-KNOTTED TECHNIQUE

Image
Woven pile floor coverings have a complex structure made up of four main weaving elements. The longitudinal framework of the carpet is made up of the warp strands, which run parallel to its length. They act as the main support system around which the entire carpet is woven. The density and structure of the carpet are enhanced by the stuffer yarns, which are woven in between the warp yarns. Weft yarns, also known as filling shots, are woven throughout the carpet's width and interlace with the warp yarns to form the foundational weave. The solidity and integrity of the carpet are established by these shoots, which are quite important.  On the other hand, the woven pile rugs' opulent and textured appearance is brought about by the pile yarns. These threads rise above the foundation weave to form the pile or tuft of the carpet, adding a visually pleasing and tactile element to the flooring. These four weaving pieces interact in a way that demonstrates the hard artistry that goes in...

BLOG 9 - FLOORCOVERING

Image
In both commercial and residential interior design, flooring plays an important part in shaping the overall look and feel of a room. In commercial settings, high-traffic areas are best served by sturdy materials that balance functionality and aesthetics, such as hardwood, vinyl, or carpet tiles. More customization is possible in residential areas because there are generally more options available, such as fashionable tiles, hardwood floors, laminate, or soft carpets. A space's visual identity is shaped by the floor covering selection, which takes longevity, comfort, and upkeep into account. It acts as a basic canvas, blending in with other design components to produce an overall and welcoming atmosphere.  A well-known trade organization, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) works to guarantee the performance, quality, and environmental sustainability of carpets and rugs. CRI was established in 1974 with the goal of raising the general standards of the carpet industry by offering guid...

WEEK 9 Floorcoverings

Image
WEEKLY SUMMARY  In this week's readings and learning, we went through an overview of the different kinds of floor coverings available for use in residential and commercial settings to enhance the interior of the building's structure and environment. In extensive work done through chapters 20 and 21, we got to see the complete process of which floor coverings are selected, instailed, and  how they provide various degrees of improvement to the space.  When looking through the various kinds of floor coverings available, it is important to understand that the different types of fiber materials used in the making of it. Each fiber has its own unique list of attributes that go into positive reasonings for implementing them into floor coverings. Since what they are being used for will be underfoot, it is important for the particular fibers to have traits of dimensional stability, and high levels of durability and crush resistance. They also must be comfortable as well, si...

WEEK 8 Blog Window & Wall Coverings

Image
WEEKLY SUMMARY  In this past week we expounded on our understandings of the implementations of window treatments, as well as wall coverings and how their collaboration interacts off of one another to create a stylistic and functional interior space. We also had the opportunity of witnessing what the Arlington Design Center had to offer in regards to their products. When going through the different types of wall coverings, I found that there is a wide  access to a vast selection of draperies, curtains, and window coverings that can be used to improve a room's look and use. These options cover a wide variety of designs, materials, and general applications. Traditional drapes lend a timeless charm to interiors with their elegant, flowing fabrics and ornate designs and structural components. Curtains On the other hand are available in a range of styles, from light and delicate ones that gently filter out light to thicker, insulated ones that provide privacy and energy effic...
